VISUAL STATEMENT
Heidi - Home is where the heart is - a story about the love for the mountains and its wildlife that a little girl lost her heart to. An emotional and visual journey into the beauty, power, and ruggedness of nature. A modern story with a very relevant reference to the most pressing issue of our time: our approach to nature.
We take viewers on a journey into a world where everyone can rediscover and reinvent themselves in the dimensions between big and small. With an international and worldwide popularity, a large audience can be affected by a little girl's open and free-spirited perspective.
A modern imagery, action-packed, visually stunning and at the same time calm, to immerse yourself in a breathtaking world and convey an emotional and gripping story. A visual language that is about taking the viewer into the story and letting them immerse themselves through concise compositions, exciting lighting, varied moods, and a camera that is based on a realistic cinema look with blurring, in order to always set a strong focus and touch the viewer deep inside.
Based on the original locations and at the same time with all the artistic freedom to create the feeling that underlines and reinforces the respective emotional mood. Acoustically, with an atmosphere in which you can hear the bees buzzing, the bells of the goats ringing on the mountain pastures and feel the rumble of thunder between the rock faces in your seats.
Heidi's cabin
Of course, there was no doubt about keeping Miyazaki's iconic set of Heidi's cabin with the three giant fir trees and adapting it for a modern feature film.
To ensure an efficient workflow, all artwork is created in such a way that it covers multiple areas of the production at once. The artwork should simultaneously serve as a set design, establishing shot ref., mood ref., color, texture & shading ref., lighting ref., dressing ref., vfx ref. and comp reference.
Together with an additional reference sheet, it should inspire all the following departments and cover as many questions as possible.
This procedure should ensure that an straightforward workflow is guaranteed without changing previous decisions. This means that there should be no Art director change, which is usually associated with additional costs.
I roughly developed and built the small village in 3D using very simple grey blocks without details. Only the windows were indicated to give me a sense of scale when building. So everything was created without any texture or lighting.
It was necessary to create the whole village structure according to the story and the STB.
The artwork was completely realized as a paint over. All details were developed while painting.
There is a lot more that has been done, such as presentation decks, style guides, prop design and a lot more artwork. I hope to be able to show more soon.
Stay tuned...
